Last Update:

Did you know that the Pitbull used to be known as the “nanny dog”? That’s a far cry from the reputation they have these days, but it’s due to their gentle, caring, protective nature and family-oriented spirit. Yup – Pitties are big babies, loving, affectionate, and super playful. Despite their gentleness, though, those teeth can be destructive if they aren’t given enough stimulation, so today we’re reviewing the best indestructible chew toys for Pitbulls.

While your Pit will most likely enjoy dragging a rubber tyre around the yard, you may want to get them something more interesting. Your Pitty will love a toy that’s made of safe, non-toxic materials, has no moving or removable parts, and is strong enough to not fall apart after a couple of power chews. Something that has an interesting shape is always great, and a toy that can be used for a few things, such as chewing, fetching, and playing tug-of-war with their human, is super.

We’ve reviewed the safest, most indestructible, and most fun chew toys for Pitbulls. Your guy or girl will be smiling from ear to ear when you present them with one of these, and the best thing is that it should last for ages, even for the most powerful of chewers.

10 Best Indestructible Chew Toys For Pitbulls

1. JW Pet Hol-ee Roller Extreme Dog Toy

Most Versatile: Can be used for fetch, tug, stuffing, and bouncing

Overall Rating92%
Safety90%
Durability90%
Shape90%
Versatility95%
Affordability95%

PROS

  • Made out of durable, non-toxic rubber
  • Double-moulded, designed for tough chewers
  • Super versatile, can be used for fetch, tug, stuffing, and bouncing
  • Comes in Jumbo size
  • Quite affordable Pro 2

CONS

  • Doesn’t float, so unless your pup swims it’s best kept out of water
  • Smaller treats may not work for stuffing

If you could get your pup only one toy, this should be it. The Hol-ee Roller can be used for a game of fetch, a tug-of-war, a bouncy chase, or a treat-retrieving game, so it offers hours upon hours of fun. Of course, many of these games are better with a human involved, but if your pup ends up spending plenty of time by themselves they can stay entertained with it too. It’s durable enough to withstand a lot of plain old chewing, too.

Alleviates Boredom

The sheer versatility of this toy makes for hours of activity. It’s chewy, so if your pup is simply in the mood to gnaw on something then this will work well. It’s non-toxic and double-moulded, so even the chewiest of chewers shouldn’t be able to destroy it easily.

This treat is also perfect for bonding between human and pooch. It’s super for tugging games as it’s got a bit of a stretch to it and throwing games as it has a bit of bounce. It doesn’t float, though, so if it ends up in the pool you may need to fish it out.

Treat-Stuffing Fun

The honey-comb design makes this toy perfect for stuffing with things like tennis balls or large treats. Even something as simple as smearing peanut butter on the inside can keep your pup busy for hours, licking and chewing. Smaller treats could be a problem as they may fall out far too easily.

Pitbulls are highly intelligent and need constant mental stimulation, so something of this nature is a great option to keep their brains busy as much as their teeth.

2. Goughnuts Indestructible Chew Toy Maxx

Premium Option: Extremely durable

PROS

  • Extremely durable
  • Floats in water
  • It’s recyclable
  • Has a “safety indicator”
  • Designed by polymer engineers
  • Available in a ring or a stick shape

CONS

  • These chews can smell quite strongly of rubber

Goughnuts products are our premium pick for Pitbulls’ strong jaws. They come in rings or sticks, so you can choose one your pooch likes or simply get both for some variety. Even the most hardcore of chewers should take ages to get to the middle of this rubber doughnut, and if they do, Goughnut will replace it for you free of charge. That’s how much they trust the value of their own product, and we are behind them all the way. Give this a try for the power chewing Pitbull in your life. You won’t be disappointed.

Safety First

Goughnuts are not only made of great quality, non-toxic stuff, they also have a special safety feature that allows us humans to see when the Goughnut needs to be replaced. Inside the black outer layer is a red rubber ring. If your fluff can chew all the way through to expose the red ring, Goughnuts will replace the chew for you.

This is a super feature as it places all the emphasis on the safety of your pooch. Once the red ring has been reached, the integrity of the product is compromised and rather than allow your pooch to keep chewing on something that may become a hazard, they can get started on a new, intact Goughnut for nothing.

Highly Durable

These toys have been designed by mechanical and polymer engineers, so you can be sure they are the toughest on the market, while still being perfectly safe for your pup. They also have a unique visual safety indicator on each of their toys, making it easy to see at a glance.

Goughnuts’ saying “Green for go, red for stop” explains how their colour coding system works, and reinforces the importance of getting a new toy when you see the red inner ring peeking through. Their toys come in different colours and those colours indicate the strength of the rubber. Green was the original colour, and has since been upgraded to black, which is the toughest of them all, making use of carbon reinforcement.

Generally the solid coloured toys have a safety indicator inside, while those with patterns do not, and use the pattern to indicate the strength of the rubber.

3. Arm & Hammer Ora-Play Gorilla Dental Chew

Best Fresh Breath Chew: Helps to reduce tartar and plaque buildup

Versatility85%
Affordability90%

PROS

  • Great shape for hours of chewing fun
  • Dishwasher safe and easy to clean
  • Infused with baking soda for a freshening effect
  • Helps to reduce tartar and plaque buildup
  • Made from all-natural, super durable rubber
  • Can be stuffed with treats

CONS

  • It’s recommended for dogs up to 35 pounds, although it is aimed at “the toughest chewers”

Toys that serve more than one purpose are super, and this one not only provides a good chew but it freshens your Pitty’s breath and cleans their teeth too. Although it says it’s for dogs up to 35 pounds, if your Pit is bigger than that it’s still worth giving this funky-shaped chew a try – it is said to be extremely durable. The gorilla and crocodile shapes are for “strong chewers”, so these would be your best bet for a Pitbull jaw. If your Pit needs a chew toy and some breath-freshening at the same time, give this one a go.

Perfectly Safe

This chew is made from very durable, all-natural rubber that should last for ages without breaking or flaking. It’s infused with baking soda, which is a natural product and helps remove tartar and plaque from your pup’s teeth, leaving them with fresher breath.

It’s also dishwasher safe, which makes this super easy to clean. You may wonder why a chew toy might need to be cleaned, but sometimes you just don’t want a slippery, slobbery toy in your home. It;s as simple as adding this to the dishwasher with the rest of your dishes to get a clean, still-fresh chew for your pooch.

Funky And Stuffable

The shape is quite different to others on this list, and the crocodile and gorilla shapes will work best for heavy chewers. They are ridged and interestingly shaped and will feel different to any other kind of chew, keeping your pooch busy for hours. The unique shape also promotes tooth and gum health.

If you like hiding treats for your pooch, you can stuff whatever you want up the … Well, let’s just say you can stuff these funky chews with crunchy or lickable treats to keep your pup busy for even longer.

4. Planet Dog Orbee-Tuff Snoop Interactive Treat Dispenser Toy

Best Treat Dispenser: Provides hours of fun and mental stimulation

PROS

  • Provides hours of fun and mental stimulation
  • Made of non-toxic, BPA-free material
  • Infused with mint for a breath-freshening effect
  • Easy to use and clean
  • Made from safe, durable Orbee-Tuff material

CONS

  • Can be easy to overfeed dogs with this!

Although there are plenty of toys that can be stuffed with treats, this one is made purely for that purpose. Sure, it can be played with by itself but it really shines as a stimulating mental puzzle for your pup as he or she tries to figure out how to get those tasty things out of it and into their mouth.

Non-Toxic Material

This ball toy is made of non-toxic material so it’s totally safe for your fluff to chew, lick, and nibble on. It’s also BPA-free, which is great and adds an extra health benefit over some other toys.

Orbee-Tuff has patented their own material that is FDA-approved and they use it to make all their toys. You can be sure whatever you buy from these guys is of the very best quality and completely safe for your pup to put in their mouth.

Treat Dispensing System

This toy is basically a ball with a hole in it, but with a twist. The opening to insert the treats is pushed inward after the treats are inside, meaning your pooch can see and smell the treats (it’s also translucent, so they can see them from all angles), but they need to figure out how to get their tongues on the crunchy things.

It should offer long-lasting entertainment for your pup, and as an added bonus, the material is infused with a minty flavour so your pup’s breath  is freshened as they chew on it.

5. Ethical Pet Play Strong Rubber Bone Dog Toy

Best Value For Money: Has a lifetime warranty

Overall Rating89%
Safety85%
Durability95%
Shape90%
Versatility85%
Affordability90%

PROS

  • Designed specifically for aggressive chewers
  • For indoor or outdoor use
  • Comes in a few different sizes
  • Has a Lifetime Warranty

CONS

  • Some dogs may not be comfortable with the shape

This bone-shaped chew toy is not only well-priced, it’s apparently one of the toughest on the market and has a Lifetime Warranty to prove it. It’s durable and can be used indoors or outdoors, in the pool or on land, and can be filled with anything your dog’s heart desires to make it more than just an average, indestructible chew toy.

Ultra Durable Material

The toy is crafted from thermoplastic rubber, which is a kind of plastic-rubber hybrid. This is perfectly safe and makes for a seriously durable chewy toy. It’s great for chewers who are aggressive with their toys and will last a long time, which is a bonus considering it’s so affordable.

The mixed elements of plastic and rubber give it a nice bounce, meaning it can be used for games galore. It also comes in multiple sizes, so be careful not to give your Pitbull something too small that won’t satisfy his chewing urge or that might be a choking hazard.

6. Himalayan Yak Chews

Best Edible Chew: Made from all-natural ingredients

Overall Rating89%
Safety95%
Durability95%
Shape90%
Versatility85%
Affordability90%

PROS

  • Made from all-natural ingredients
  • Gluten and lactose-free
  • Contains no artificial ingredients
  • Quite durable for an edible chew
  • Promotes a healthier mouth by reducing tartar buildup
  • Money-back guarantee

CONS

  • If your dog likes the taste of this, it may not last long

Generally it’s not recommended to get an edible chew for dogs that are as powerful as Pitbulls. They tend to not last very long and can get very expensive if your pup is chewing out of boredom or anxiety. This chew, though, is one of the most durable edible ones around, and should provide a while of distraction for your Pitbull, while providing them a little nutrition as well.

All-Natural & Healthy

This chew is made from all-natural stuff, so it’s pretty healthy for your pooch to chew on. The ingredients include yak milk, cow’s milk, lime, and salt, which provide a nice flavour. They’re basically sticks of hard cheese, which can be chewed on for hours.

The bonus is that when this chew gets down to the last inch or so piece, you can pop it in the microwave for a crunchy little treat for your pooch, so you don’t need to waste a possible dangerous end-piece.

Helps Remove Tartar

This chew is pretty hard, but it’s natural so as long as your pooch doesn’t hurt himself chewing on it, there is little danger. Chewing on something of this consistency also helps remove tartar and plaque from your pup’s teeth, so it will assist in reducing bad breath.

7. Kong Puppy Durable Rubber Chew

Best For Teething Pitbull Puppies: Helps soothe pain and discomfort caused by teething

Overall Rating89%
Safety90%
Durability90%
Shape90%
Versatility90%
Affordability85%

PROS

  • Made with their “puppy rubber” formula
  • Long-lasting and durable
  • Helps soothe pain and discomfort caused by teething
  • Unusual shape for fun chewing and unpredictable bounce
  • Can be stuffed with treats
  • Created for power chewing puppies, just like Pitbulls

CONS

  • May not be as durable when your puppy grows into an adult and keeps chewing on it!

Pitbull puppies are just a chew-crazy as the adults, and they have to deal with teething as well, making them twice as likely to chew on things. This Kong toy is puppy-specific and last ages when gnawed by puppy teeth. It’s also a pretty cool shape, so it’ll keep your little one busy for ages as they make sure they don’t lose their grip on it, either with their paws or with their teeth.

Unusual Shape

The unique shape of these toys makes for an interesting chewing experience. It’s almost impossible to gnaw through a single spot, as it’s likely to move around and play-fight with your pup, so he’ll have to work to keep at it.

The shape also provides an unpredictable bounce, which means many a fun game can be had simply by throwing this toy and letting your puppy chase it. If you want to tire out a pitbull puppy fast, this is the way to do it!

For Power Puppy Chewers

Kong has a puppy-specific rubber recipe, customised for a growing pup’s gums and teeth. The rubber is gentle on their mouth while still being long-lasting, and is created for power chewers specifically.

It’s also veterinarian-recommended, so if you ask your own vet about it, you’re likely to get a good recommendation for these toys.

8. Planet Dog Orbee-Tuff Diamond Plate Dog Ball

Best Small Ball-Type Toy: For fetching, chasing, and catching games

Overall Rating88%
Safety95%
Durability90%
Shape90%
Versatility85%
Affordability85%

PROS

  • Great for fetching, chasing, and catching games
  • Bounces and floats for fun everywhere
  • Non-toxic, BPA-free, and FDA-approved
  • Textured for an easier and better feeling chew
  • Can be stuffed with treats
  • Available in two sizes
  • Recyclable

CONS

  • The smaller ball may be too small for some Pitbulls’ mouths

This tough, textured little ball is created for pups who tend to destroy their toys. It’s incredibly durable, has a nice bounce (which makes it perfect for games of fetch), floats (so it really can be used everywhere), and is made to last. If your Pitbull loves to play, chase, and fetch, this toy would be an awesome option for him.

Super Safe

The ball is made from a material called Orbee-Tuff, which was created by Planet Dog specifically to be highly durable and nearly indestructible. It’s approved by the FDA, non-toxic, and completely free of BPAs and phthalates, which are common in other toys. In addition to this, it’s completely recyclable, so it’s not only good for your pooch, it’s great for the environment too.

9. Jolly Pets Romp-n-Roll Ball

Best Tug Toy: Easy-grip

Overall Rating87%
Safety85%
Durability90%
Shape90%
Versatility85%
Affordability85%

PROS

  • Easy-grip rope for both pups and humans, which helps make a good play session
  • The ball doesn’t deflate, even if punctured
  • Sturdy and tough, designed to be manhandled (or … doghandled)
  • Comes in three different sizes
  • Perfect for land and water adventures

CONS

  • The rope could be destroyed quickly by vigorous chewers

A good tug-of-war is a favourite of many pups, and it’s an amazing bonding exercise for pets and their humans. It’s hard on the tug toy, though, and if the toy is something that your pooch is going to be chewing on as well, it needs to be something tough. This ball-and-rope toy is just that – super durable, and suitable for rough play.

Very Durable

The rope is actually the weakest link on this toy, and is likely to be the first thing that goes. The ball is seriously tough and doesn’t deflate even if it’s been punctured. It’s a great size too, and just about perfect for a Pitty mouth. The ball material is pretty tough and can withstand quite a bit of chewing, even if the rope is chewed to pieces quite quickly. Even if the rope has to be removed, though, this toy can fit nicely into your pup’s mouth and can be carried around, thrown, kicked, rolled around with, and should keep its shape nicely.

10. HuggleHounds Plush Corduroy Squeaky Knottie Dog Toy

Best Plush Toy: Knotted at joints for extra durability

Overall Rating87%
Safety85%
Durability90%
Shape90%
Versatility85%
Affordability85%

PROS

  • Great for Pitbulls who love plushies but destroy them far too quickly
  • Knotted at joints for extra durability
  • Made of durable corduroy
  • Available in many different shapes
  • Tested to withstand over 100 pounds of tugging pressure
  • No external seams

CONS

  • Contains squeakers, which can be choking hazards if they are exposed

Some Pitbulls are really big babies and just love a fluffy, cuddly thing to snuggle at night. Especially for dogs with anxiety, a plush toy can be a great comforter. The problem with most plush toys is that they really don’t stand up to even light playing with teeth involved. This knottie dog toy, though, is designed to be both cuddly and strong, and it does a good job of fulfilling both of those purposes.

The Toughest Plushie

These toys are made from corduroy, which is a pretty durable material compared to many of the fabrics that are usually used to make these kinds of things. HuggleHounds uses their own Tuffut Technology Lining to give it an extra boost of durability from the inside out. The limbs of the plushie are knotted, to give your fluff something to really chew on and to add some extra stability.

Variety Of Types

There are 24 different knotties available, although some may not be in stock at the time of buying. They’re also available in either large or small sizes, so you should be able to find a suitable one for your Pit.

The only thing we would caution is the fact that there are multiple squeakers in this toy, and although it’s super durable, your pup can still manage to rip them out and they then become  a choking hazard. Be careful, but in general, you won’t find a hardier plush toy than this one. If you have an anxious Pitbull, one of these could do wonders for easing their stress, providing a chew thing, and also being something to cuddle when their human isn’t around.

Testing Protocol & Criteria Used For Evaluation

Criteria 1 – Safety

This is the most important aspect of anything that goes into your dog’s mouth. If there are toxic substances, small parts that can be a choking hazard, or are made of materials that are easily ripped apart and can be dangerous in any way, then it’s not safe to give to your pup.

We’ve assessed all of the above things when reviewing the toys in this article. Toys that are small enough to be swallowed, made of materials that are toxic or not good for your pooch, or have the potential to be a choking hazard have been left off of the list.

Indestructible toys are not likely to be made of things that are edible, so the materials will most likely vary. We’ve also attempted to avoid rawhide, as it is a controversial material and many dog owners are now choosing to steer clear of it.

Criteria 2 – Durability

Obviously, this factor is highly important for a toy that claims to be indestructible. Even if the toy doesn’t claim to last forever, nobody wants to be buying new stuff for their Pitbull every week because the old things have been destroyed.

Durability is essential but it’s also important that safety isn’t forsaken in order to create an extremely durable toy. Those two categories need to work together – the toy should be safe as well as being highly durable and not likely to be ruined by excitable Pitbull teeth.

Durability also includes things like being made of a decent enough material that your Pitty won’t be able to chew off small pieces that could be hazardous, and not having small, movable parts that could come off.

We’ve checked out these toys and made sure that they’re made of quality material, but not rock-hard that may actually hurt your pooch.

Criteria 3 – Shape

When it comes to chewing, shape can make quite a difference to your pup. Not only do different shapes feel different to chew on, but each presents a challenge to your pup, so it can be as much a mental chew as a physical one.

Also, some types of chew toys can be hard for your Pitbull to hold while they’re chewing, which will only lead to frustration and an even more increased desire to chew on things! This could lead to table legs or door frames being destroyed and the toy being ignored, which defeats the point of having a toy to begin with.

A shape that is comfortable for your Pitty to get a hold of while they’re chewing and easy to get into their mouth, safe to chew on, and presents a bit of a chew-challenge is great. We’ve made sure every toy here has a shape that works for its actual purpose (chew toy, tug toy, fetch toy, etc), and is a safe and usable shape for your pooch.

Criteria 4 – Versatility

Although the purpose of a chew toy is typically to get you pup to chew on it instead of other things, some of them can be made for various purposes.

A toy can be simply a chew, to get rid of frustration, help puppies with teething, or alleviate boredom. However, it can also be a tug toy, a fetch toy, or a treat dispenser. While the main purpose of all the toys on this list should be to give your Pitbull a good chew, having a versatile toy can be a great idea.

Not only will your pooch get more joy out of it than simply chewing, but it allows a chance for human/pup bonding if you can use the toy to play a game of fetch or tug-of-war.

We’ve checked out how versatile each of these toys is in relation to its main purpose, and included in this category is ease of use

Criteria 5 – Affordability

As much as we pet parents love our fur babies, they can be expensive to look after. We all want to provide them with the best, whether that be food, beds, treats, accessories, or toys, and when you add potential vet’s bills and other things onto that, it can be a pricey experience.

Of course, for most of us, that’s not going to stop us from making sure our pup has what they need. But we will always assess the affordability of a product in order to cater for every type of pet family out there.

Toys that are indestructible are likely to last longer than the average toy, but they also don’t need to be ridiculously pricey. We’ve given you some info on the cost of each toy, and you can decide which would fall into your budget.

Questions & Answers

What makes a toy a good one for a Pitbull?

The perfect Pitbull toy should tick a few boxes.

Safety always comes first, so the toy should be made of a material that is non-toxic but still durable. Edible materials may not last very long with a Pitbull, so they are not recommended if you’re looking for a long-lasting toy.

Although durability is important, the material needs to be something that isn’t rock-hard and dangerous to your pup’s mouth. A rubber-type material is always great, as it’s pliable enough for a good chew, but not hard enough to be a danger.

There are plenty of different shapes of toys available, and which one you choose will depend on what your pup likes. It’s always a good idea to have a few different ones. It’s also a great idea to choose toys that can be versatile – something that can be used as a chew toy, but also a tug-of-war toy or a fetch toy.

Are there any types of toys I should avoid giving my Pitbull?

Technically, you can give your Pitbull any toy you want. How long some of them last, though, is questionable.

Plush toys, while cute and cuddly, will most likely be ripped to shreds by an enthusiastic Pitbull (although some Pitbulls will love a plushy to sleep with, so it can be worth a try). Anything that squeaks will drive your pooch wild until he finds the squeaker and destroys it, and these can be quite a choking hazard, so we recommend avoiding these.

Any toys that are similar to objects in the house can cause some confusion. For example, if you choose to give your Pitty an old shoe to chew on, when you bring home that brand new pair of Vans he may think you’ve brought him a new toy and be highly confused, not to mention very upset, when he is reprimanded for chewing on it.

Toys made from nylon can be chewed to pieces and cause either mouth injuries or intestinal injuries, so we recommend staying away from them. Also, rawhide is a controversial choice and we suggest keeping away from it too.

Why do Pitbulls need different toys to any other dog?

Pitbulls have wide, muscular jaws that can do some proper damage to whatever gets chewed on. Although they are generally very gentle with humans, when they get their teeth on a chew toy, there’s no holding back.

The average toy is most likely not made of hardy enough material to withstand a Pitbull jaw. Many chew toys are actually edible, which is great, but these ones are not likely to last any amount of time with a Pitbull chewing on it.

Unless you’re okay with getting your Pit a new toy every week, you’ll want to get them something much more durable than the average toy. A toy that is made from rubber is a great choice, but make sure you aren’t choosing something that feels like a brick. You don’t want your pup to get hurt chewing their toy.

Why are Pitbulls such power chewers?

Chewing is just something that Pitbulls do. It’s a built-in thing, although there are multiple reasons that their inner chewer can emerge.

Common reasons for chewing on stuff include boredom (especially if their humans spend all day at work), curiosity (haven’t you ever wondered what a door frame tastes like?), anxiety (especially separation anxiety – chewing can help alleviate the stress of being away from his human), teething (for puppies), or the fact that something simply tastes and feels good in their mouth.

Occasionally, a medical condition can cause compulsive chewing. It can be something simple like chewing on something to soothe an upset tummy, or something a little more unusual such as a nutritional deficiency that causes them to eat inedible things.

In rare cases it can be caused y a neurological disorder, but this is unlikely. If, however, your pup starts showing unusual symptoms in addition to their chewing, it may be time for a vet’s visit to rule out anything medical.

How do I prevent my Pitbull from getting bored with the toys that she has?

There are a couple of ways that you can help your Pitbull to feel less bored during their day. Making sure that she has a few different toys is a good idea. Although your pup is likely to have a favorite toy that’s their go-to chew-thing, they may want to chew on something that feels different for a while if they get bored.

Keeping a few toys of different shapes and textures lying around can help this quite a bit. Also, if you have a treat-dispensing type of toy and a food-motivated Pitbull, this can keep him busy for hours.

It’s also a great idea to play with your Pitbull with their toys. A game of tug or fetch is a great new way of using a chew toy, and they’ll also attach more emotional meaning to their toys if their human plays with them too.

There are rope toys, ball toys, ring toys, bar toys, bone toys, and others. Just one of each will give your pooch more than enough options to keep them interested during the day and distracted from chewing on your stuff.

Also, making sure your Pit gets enough exercise is essential to help alleviate general boredom. Taking them for a run, a vigorous game of fetch or a fun wrestle can help them burn off some energy and be more relaxed, which should help reduce the need to chew out of boredom. This, in turn, would prevent boredom setting in with toys.
