Pit bulls have wide, muscular jaws that can do some proper damage to whatever gets chewed on. Although they are generally very gentle with humans, when they get their teeth on a toy, there’s no holding back.

The average plush toy, while cute and cuddly, will most likely be ripped to shreds by an enthusiastic pit bull. More durable, almost indestructible dog toys is what you need to keep your fluff entertained without having to buy a replacement every other week.

Safety First

Goughnuts are not only made of great quality, non-toxic stuff, they also have a special safety feature that allows us humans to see when the Goughnut needs to be replaced. Inside the black outer layer is a red rubber ring. If your fluff can chew all the way through this dog chew to expose the red ring, Goughnuts will replace the chew for you.

Highly Durable

These dog toys have been designed by mechanical and polymer engineers, so you can be sure they are the toughest on the market, while still being perfectly safe for your pup. They also have a unique visual safety indicator on each of their toys, making it easy to see at a glance.

Goughnuts’ saying “Green for go, red for stop” explains how their color-coding system works, and reinforces the importance of getting a new toy when you see the red inner ring peeking through. Their toys come in different colors and those colors indicate the strength of the rubber. Green was the original color, and has since been upgraded to black, which is the toughest of them all, making use of carbon reinforcement.

Generally the solid colored dog toys have a safety indicator inside, while those with patterns do not, and use the pattern to indicate the strength of the rubber.

2. Arm & Hammer Ora-Play Gorilla Chew Toy

The shape is quite different from others on this list. They are ridged and interestingly shaped and will feel different from any other kind of chew, keeping your pooch busy for hours. The unique shape also promotes tooth and gum health.

Alleviates Boredom

This treat is also one of the best dog toys for bonding between human and pooch. It’s super for tugging games as it’s got a bit of a stretch to it and throwing games as it has a bit of bounce.

Treat-Stuffing Fun

The honey-comb design makes this toy perfect for stuffing with things like tennis balls or large treats. Even something as simple as smearing peanut butter on the inside can keep your pup busy for hours, licking and chewing. Smaller treats could be a problem as they may fall out far too easily.

4. Planet Dog Orbee-Tuff Treat Dispenser Toy

Best Treat Dispenser: Interactive dog puzzle that stimulates your dog mentally

PROS

  • Provides hours of fun and mental stimulation
  • Made of non-toxic, BPA-free material
  • Infused with mint for a breath-freshening effect
  • Made from safe, durable Orbee-Tuff material

CONS

  • Can be easy to overfeed dogs with this!

If you’re looking for dog toys that can be stuffed with treats, the Orbee-Tuff does the job in a fun, mentally stimulating way for your pup. It’s a toy that dispenses treats in a slow pace so fast eaters won’t have trouble with digestion.

This ball toy is made of non-toxic material so it’s totally safe for your fluff to chew, lick, and nibble on. It’s also BPA-free. Orbee-Tuff has patented their own material that is FDA-approved and they use it to make all their toys.

Treat-Dispensing System

This toy is basically a ball with a hole in it, but with a twist. The opening to insert the treats is pushed inward after the treats are inside, meaning your pooch can see and smell the treats (it’s also translucent, so they can see them from all angles), but they need to figure out how to get their tongues on the crunchy things.

It should offer long-lasting entertainment for your pup, and as an added bonus, the material is infused with a minty flavor so your pup’s breath is freshened as they chew on it.

5. Ethical Pet Play Strong Rubber Bone Dog Toy

All-Natural & Healthy

This chew is made from all-natural stuff, so it’s pretty healthy even for dogs with sensitive stomach or those who are lactose intolerant. The ingredients include yak milk, cow’s milk, lime, and salt, which provide a nice flavor. They’re basically sticks of hard cheese, which can be chewed on for hours.

The bonus is that when this chew gets down to the last inch or so piece, you can pop it in the microwave for a crunchy little treat for your pooch, so you don’t need to waste a possible dangerous end-piece.

7. KONG Puppy Rubber Chew Toy

Best For Teething Pitbull Puppies: Helps soothe pain and discomfort caused by teething

PROS

  • Made with their “puppy rubber” formula
  • Helps soothe pain and discomfort caused by teething
  • Unusual shape for fun chewing and unpredictable bounce
  • Created for power chewing puppies, just like Pit bulls

CONS

  • May not be as durable when your puppy grows into an adult and keeps chewing on it!

The Kong Puppy Rubber Chew Toy is puppy-specific toy that can last ages when gnawed by puppy teeth.

Kong has a puppy-specific rubber formula, customized for a growing pup’s gums and teeth. The rubber is gentle on their mouth but can still last for a long time and is created for power chewers specifically. It’s also veterinarian-recommended.

For Power Puppy Chewers

The shape also provides an unpredictable bounce, which means many a fun game can be had simply by throwing this toy and letting your puppy chase it. If you want to tire out a puppy fast, this is the way to do it!

8. Planet Dog Orbee-Tuff Ball

Best Small Ball-Type Toy: For fetching, chasing, and catching games

PROS

  • Bounces and floats for fun everywhere
  • Non-toxic, BPA-free, and FDA-approved
  • Textured for an easier and better feeling chew
  • Can be stuffed with treats

CONS

  • The smaller ball may be too small for some Pit bulls’ mouths

The Planet Dog Orbee-Tuff Ball tough, textured little ball is created for pups who tend to destroy their toys. It’s incredibly durable, has a nice bounce (which makes it perfect for games of fetch), floats (so it really can be used everywhere), and is made to last. If you have one of those Pit bulls who loves to play, chase, and fetch, this toy would be an awesome option for him.

Super Safe

The ball is made from a material called Orbee-Tuff, which was created by Planet Dog specifically to be highly durable and nearly indestructible. It’s approved by the FDA, non-toxic, and completely free of BPAs and phthalates, which are common in other dog toys. In addition to this, it’s completely recyclable, so it’s not only good for your pooch, it’s great for the environment too.

9. Jolly Pets Romp-n-Roll Ball

Best Tug Toy: Easy-grip design, ideal for tugging, chasing, and even swimming

PROS

  • Easy-grip rope for both pups and humans, which helps make a good play session
  • The ball doesn’t deflate, even if punctured
  • Sturdy and tough, designed to be manhandled (or … doghandled)
  • Perfect for land and water adventures

CONS

  • The rope could be destroyed quickly by vigorous chewers

A good tug of war is a favorite of many pups, and it’s an amazing bonding exercise for pets and their humans. It’s hard on the tug toy, though, and if the toy is something that your pooch is going to be chewing on as well, it needs to be something tough. The Jolly Pets Romp-n-Roll Ball is just that – super durable, and suitable for rough play.

Very Durable

The rope is actually the weakest link on this toy, and is likely to be the first thing that goes. The ball is seriously tough and doesn’t deflate even if it’s been punctured. It’s a great size too, and just about perfect for a Pitty mouth. The ball material is pretty tough and can withstand quite a bit of chewing, even if the rope is chewed to pieces quite quickly. Even if the rope has to be removed, though, this toy can fit nicely into your pup’s mouth and can be carried around, thrown, kicked, rolled around with, and should keep its shape nicely.

What to Look for in the Best Indestructible Toy for Pitbulls

1) Safety

This is the most important aspect of anything that goes into your dog’s mouth. If there are toxic substances, small parts that can be choked on, or are made of materials that are easily ripped apart and can be dangerous in any way, then it’s not safe to give to your pup.

Toys that are small enough to be swallowed, made of materials that are toxic or not good for your pooch, or have the potential to be a choking hazard have been left off of the list. Indestructible dog toys are not likely to be made of things that are edible, so the materials will most likely vary.

2) Durability

This factor is highly important for a toy that claims to be indestructible. Even if the toy doesn’t claim to last forever, nobody wants to be buying new stuff for their Pit Bull every week because the old things have been destroyed.

Durability is essential but it’s also important that safety isn’t forsaken in order to create an extremely durable toy. Those two categories need to work together – the dog toys should be safe as well as being highly durable and not likely to be ruined by excitable teeth.

Durability also includes things like being made of a decent enough material that your Pitty won’t be able to chew off small pieces that could be hazardous, and not having small, movable parts that could come off.

3) Shape

When it comes to chewing, shape can make quite a difference to your pup. Not only do different shapes feel different to chew on, but each presents a challenge to your pup, so it can be as much a mental chew as a physical one.

Also, some types of toys can be hard for your Pit Bull to hold while they’re chewing, which will only lead to frustration and an even more increased desire to chew on things! This could lead to table legs or door frames being destroyed and the toy being ignored, which defeats the point of having dog toys to begin with.

A shape that is comfortable for your Pitty to get a hold of while they’re chewing and easy to get into their mouth, safe to chew on, and presents a bit of a chew-challenge is great.

4) Versatility

Although the purpose of a dog toy is typically to get you pup to chew on it instead of other things, some of them can be made for various purposes.

A toy can be simply a chew, to get rid of frustration, help puppies with teething, or alleviate boredom. However, it can also be a tug toy, a fetch toy, or a treat dispenser. While the main purpose of all the dog toys on this list should be to give your Pit Bull a good chew, having a versatile toy can be a great idea.

Not only will your pooch get more joy out of it than simply chewing, but it allows a chance for human/pup bonding if you can use the toy to play a game of fetch or tug-of-war.

Questions & Answers

What makes a toy good for Pitbulls?

The perfect Pit bull dog toy should tick a few boxes.

Safety always comes first, so dog toys should be made of a material that is non-toxic but still durable. Edible materials may not last very long with a Pit bull, so they are not recommended if you’re looking for a long-lasting toy.

Although durability is important, the material needs to be something that isn’t rock-hard and dangerous to your pup’s mouth. A rubber-type material is always great, as it’s pliable enough for a good chew, but not hard enough to be a danger.

There are plenty of different shapes of chewy dog toys available, and which one you choose will depend on what your pup likes. It’s always a good idea to have a few different ones. It’s also a great idea to choose dog toys that can be versatile – something that can be used as a dog toy, but also a tug-of-war toy or a fetch toy.

What types of indestructible dog toys I should avoid giving my Pit bull?

Technically, you can give your Pit bull any toy you want. How long some of them last, though, is questionable.

Plush toys, while cute and cuddly, will most likely be ripped to shreds by an enthusiastic Pit bull (although some Pit bulls will love a plushy to sleep with, so it can be worth a try). Anything that squeaks will drive your pooch wild until he finds the squeaker and destroys it, and these can be quite a choking hazard, so we recommend avoiding these.

Any dog toys that are similar to objects in the house can cause some confusion. For example, if you choose to give your Pitty an old shoe to chew on, when you bring home that brand new pair of Vans he may think you’ve brought him a new toy and be highly confused, not to mention very upset, when he is reprimanded for chewing on it.

Dog toys made from nylon can be chewed to pieces and cause either mouth injuries or intestinal injuries, so we recommend staying away from them. Also, rawhide is a controversial choice and we suggest keeping away from it too.

Why do Pit bulls need indestructible chew toys?

Chewing is just something that Pit bulls do. It’s a built-in thing, although there are multiple reasons that their inner chewer can emerge.

Common reasons for chewing on stuff include boredom (especially if their humans spend all day at work), curiosity (haven’t you ever wondered what a door frame tastes like?), anxiety (especially separation anxiety – chewing can help alleviate the stress of being away from his human), teething (for puppies), or the fact that something simply tastes and feels good in their mouth.

Occasionally, a medical condition can cause compulsive chewing. It can be something simple like chewing on something to soothe an upset tummy, or something a little more unusual such as a nutritional deficiency that causes them to eat inedible things.

In rare cases it can be caused by a neurological disorder, but this is unlikely. If, however, your pup starts showing unusual symptoms in addition to their chewing, it may be time for a vet’s visit to rule out anything medical.

Pit bulls have wide, strong, and muscular jaw that can do great damage to whatever they get their eyes on. The average dog toy is most likely not made of hardy enough material to withstand a Pit bull jaw. Many toys are actually edible, which is great, but these ones are not likely to last any amount of time with a Pit bull chewing on it.

Unless you’re okay with getting your Pit a new toy every week, you’ll want to get them something much more durable than the average toy. Toys for Pit bulls made from rubber are a great choice, but make sure you aren’t choosing something that feels like a brick. You don’t want your pup to get hurt chewing their toy.

How do I prevent my Pit bull from getting bored with her toys?

There are a couple of ways that you can help your Pit bull to feel less bored during their day. Making sure that she has a few different toys is a good idea. Although your pup is likely to have a favorite toy that’s their go-to chew-thing, they may want to chew on something that feels different for a while if they get bored.

Keeping a few toys of different shapes and textures lying around can help this quite a bit. Also, if you have a treat-dispensing type of toy and a food-motivated Pitbull, this can keep him busy for hours.

Toys for Pit bulls are more fun for them with a human element. A game of tug of war or fetch is a great new way of using a dog toy, and they’ll also attach more emotional meaning to their toys if their human plays with them too.

There are rope toys, ball toys, ring toys, bar toys, bone toys, and others. Just one of each will give your pooch more than enough options to keep them interested during the day and distracted from chewing on your stuff.

Also, making sure your Pit gets enough exercise is essential to help alleviate general boredom. Taking them for a run, a vigorous game of fetch or a fun wrestle can help them burn off some energy and be more relaxed, which should help reduce the need to chew out of boredom. This, in turn, would prevent boredom setting in with toys.
