Last Update:

There’s nothing quite like the love of a dog. No matter how the day has gone, all pet parents know how much better you feel after coming home to a wildly wagging tail, an excited yappy greeting, a wide canine grin and …

A smelly lick-fest. If your dog’s stinky licks make you feel like you need a shower, you’re not alone.

Thankfully, there are things out there to help combat this problem!

When looking for the best dog breath fresheners or sprays, you’ll want to make sure it’s free from harmful ingredients and chemicals, has a decent, fresh smell (and taste), and is easy to use. Nobody wants to be bitten by a panicky dog who isn’t sure what you’re trying to do to their mouth.

Remember, all of these will need to be used in conjunction with regular brushing.

PROS

  • Vet recommended
  • 100% natural and safe
  • Contains aloe to fight infection and baking soda to clean teeth
  • Suitable for dogs and cats, if you have both

CONS

  • The spray range is wide so be careful spraying it into small dogs’ mouths – you don’t want to accidentally get it in their eyes

This is the fanciest-named product on our list, but don’t let that fool you into thinking it’s not great quality. This spray is organic, super safe for your pet, and contains some seriously helpful ingredients to keep your pet’s mouth as healthy and fresh as possible.

Phosphate and Paraben-Free

This vet-recommended spray contains nothing artificial at all, and also avoids alcohol, phosphates, and parabens. It’s as healthy as can be, and you’ll be boosting your dog’s immune system a little when you use this too – it contains aloe vera in small amounts, which helps to fight infection. Although this is aimed at gums and teeth, it will have good effects on your pup’s general health too.

High-Quality Ingredient List

You’ll find aloe vera, mint, and baking soda as the active ingredients in the bottle. Aloe vera has been known to be toxic to animals but only in very large doses and only a certain part of the plant, so you have absolutely nothing to worry about here. It’s a natural anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial, which will soothe irritation and fight bad breath-causing bacteria.

Mint, in addition to its freshness, has a host of other healthy properties, including being a great antibacterial agent. This, coupled with the gentle cleansing action of baking soda, will ensure a fantastic mouth-clean and lasting freshness.

This spray serves the dual purposes of freshening your pup’s breath and controlling plaque and tartar buildup. For this price you’d expect something that only masks the smell, but no! Bodhi Dog has delivered a truly remarkable spray for its price, and you can be sure your pup won’t be exposed to anything but natural, healthy ingredients.

Affordable Professional Quality

This nicely priced spray is right on-par with the others that cost twice as much, and it comes in a bigger bottle too! It uses fresh, healthy ingredients to eliminate bad-smelling breath by killing off unhealthy bacteria, and leaving traces of spearmint and cloves on your pup’s breath.

It also helps remove plaque and tartar using a small amount of all-natural baking soda. This is gentle and not abrasive, and it gets rid of build-up between teeth without causing damage.

High-Quality Ingredient List

The ingredient list is fairly short, which is great as it means there are most likely no unnecessary additions. Distilled water, spearmint extract, baking soda, cinnamon, natural honey, cloves, aloe vera, and naturally based minerals are what you’ll find in this product.

These ingredients are superior to many, for various reasons. Not only are they cleansing and freshening in a gentle way, the honey means that this spray is naturally sweetened, and cinnamon is a natural analgesic, meaning that if your dog has been suffering from dental pain, this will help there as well.

  • No scent or taste, so your pet won’t even notice it
  • Self-regulating formula that destroys bacteria and periodontal pathogens

Helps Bad Breath & Swollen Gums

The bad breath of our dogs is what affects us humans, but we can forget that it can come with a whole lot of unpleasant and possibly painful symptoms for our pups. Mouth pain and swollen gums is one of those symptoms, and this additive helps treat that too, with every sip of water your pup takes.

It also works to strengthen teeth and prevent cavities, so it’s a well-rounded dental formula for improving your pup’s oral health in all ways.

All-Natural & Safe

There are no artificial flavors or colors in this formula, no alcohol, no sugar, no harmful detergents or abrasive chemicals, and no strong-smelling fresh flavors. It’s designed to be added in such a way that it doesn’t disrupt your dog’s drinking habits, and simply gets to work in the background to improve their dental condition.

  • Tasteless & odorless, so your pup won’t even notice it’s there
  • Very simple to use

CONS

  • It may take some experimenting to add the right amount to your pup’s water bowl – the recommended dosage may be too strong for some and they’ll refuse to drink

TropiClean is a water additive that can assist in keeping your dog’s breath normal and healthy. The reason we’ve labeled it as “dual-purpose” is that, while there is an Original option, they have a variety of choices in their range that target more than one health concern at a time.

Fresh Breath And More

The Original flavor is created from a variety of natural ingredients and includes green tea, which is a superfood ingredient and will improve not only your dog’s breath, but their immune system too. On top of this, though, there are five other options that are all geared for different things – in addition to their breath-freshening properties (there’s even one for cats).

“Advanced Whitening” is the one you’ll want if your pup needs extra help removing tartar and plaque from their teeth. There’s a “Puppy” option which is designed to be a preventative measure and ensure that tartar never becomes a problem.

The “Digestive Support” option contain added probiotics for easier digestion, “Hip & Joint” has a nice dash of glucosamine to fortify joints, and “Skin & Coat” contains an extra dose of Omega-3 and -6 fatty acids for silky fur and supple skin.

Easy To Use

This is one of the easiest products to use and takes just about no time at all. Simply add one capful per 16oz of water (that’s 470ml), and that’s that. It’s meant to be tasteless and odorless, so your pooch shouldn’t even notice a thing.

Remember, though, that a dog’s sense of smell is way more sensitive than ours, so if your pup does suddenly stop drinking their water, you may need to adjust the amount you put in.

Follow Instructions Carefully

Some customers have reported their dogs resting badly to this water additive, or having diarrhea after drinking their water. However, one astute customer pointed out that she had confused the T on the instructions for a tablespoon instead of a teaspoon, and when she downed the dosage her dogs’ tummy issues cleared right up.

This is an issue that could put many off buying, but simply following these instructions clearly could be a tummy-saver for your dog.

Also, bear in mind that if you have a little dog, you may need to go with half a teaspoon instead.

Controversial Ingredients

In comparison to other pet water additives, there are some ingredients in this one that are slightly more toxic to dogs.

Sodium bicarbonate (or baking soda) can react with the stomach acid and cause bloating, but it’s also super effective for cleaning teeth and removing plaque.

The important point here is that these ingredients can be toxic, but only in high quantities. These ingredients in this water additive have been carefully measured to be as effective as possible without causing harm to the dog drinking it.

Premium Quality Ingredients

There has been some controversy over the quality of the ingredients, but we have found them to be safe for your pet. Aloe vera is the main ingredient, and it is sourced from the gel part of the leaf, which does not contain any harmful ingredients. Other parts of the plant do, so this is an important distinction. It’s a powerful immune booster, and so it forms a super base for the product.

Peppermint and spearmint are both great, fresh ingredients that add a nice-smelling element to your pup’s breath and pose no dangers whatsoever. Baking soda, or sodium bicarbonate, is a non-toxic, highly effective and gentle cleansing agent and is natural.

The ingredients are of premium quality, and not only contain great properties for breath-freshening and teeth cleansing, but also have immune-boosting health properties. We can’t fault this product – it’s a well-rounded cleanser and freshener that is recommended.

Testing Protocol & Criteria Used For Evaluation

Criteria 1 – Ingredients

As with all products that are going to be ingested by your pup, the one you choose should be made from only premium quality, natural ingredients

You may think that a spray has hardly anything in it, but there’s still the potential for harmful chemicals to sneak in there. While these things may do a great job at freshening your dog’s breath, they’re doing terrible things to your dog’s body long-term.

We’ve made sure each product we’ve reviewed contains only natural, superior-quality ingredients, nothing artificial or chemical, and is in the best health-interest for your pooch. After all, we focus a lot on making sure our pup has the best quality food and treats – we wouldn’t want something as small as a breath spray to be doing harm without us even realizing it.

Criteria 2 – Taste

Your life is going to be far easier if your pup likes the taste of this stuff you’re spraying into their mouth. If you’re trying to work with a product your pooch hates, well, you’re in for a bit of a rough time (and potential painful nips from an unhappy fluff).

Administering this spray should be more like giving your pet a treat than feeding them medicine. They should be happy to receive it, not hiding in the corner every time they see the bottle emerge from the cupboard.

We’ve evaluated the products on this list in terms of taste as well. This breath-freshening process should make both the human and the dog’s lives easier, so you want something that is going to taste great to your dog while keeping their halitosis away.

Criteria 3 – Cleaning Ability

A great breath-freshener also fulfills the purpose of helping clean your pup’s mouth out. Bad breath is often caused by bits of food hanging around between teeth, and plaque that has accumulated on teeth and gums.

It’s all fine and well to spray a little in your pup’s mouth to mask the odor, but in the end, we really want something that is going to tackle the core of the issue, and not just hide the problem.

This criteria is all about the product’s ability to clean your fluff’s mouth and teeth as well as providing that freshness. We’ve made sure there are no products that will be rough on your pup’s gums and tongue, but that they still have a cleaning component and are not just designed to mask a nasty smell.

Criteria 4 – Ease Of Use

You don’t want to have to hold your dog down to administer the nice-smelling stuff to them. No matter how bad their breath, nobody wants to have to torture their pup to get their bad breath to improve.

We’ve made sure everything on this list is easy to use, both for you and your pooch. It should be almost effortless to incorporate something of this nature into a daily routine. It should also be easy to store away so your pooch can’t down a whole container of fresh-breath spray in five minutes.

Everything on this list is designed to be user-friendly for humans and pets. Some things may work better for you than others, and remember, every pet is different. You’ll also need to take that into consideration when choosing something. If your pet has a problem with being sprayed (some do due to past trauma), then a water additive or chew may be the easier thing to use in that case.

Criteria 5- Affordability

It’s really only when you get a pup and you’re already in love and in the thick of things that you realize just how much it costs to be a pet parent (just like being the parent to a little human). It’s not just about feeding them and making sure they have a bed. There’s much more to it than that, and once you’ve come to this realization, it can be quite a shock to see how much you’re spending on your fur baby

This is why affordability is always a factor that we consider on these lists. Between food, treats, bedding, toys, training, inoculations, medications, and whatever else you may need, the budget can suddenly seem like it’s never enough.

We’ve rated each product according to how affordable it is, and while there may be some on the list that are on the higher end of the spectrum, we’ve made sure to include some lower-priced things that are still top-quality.

There’s something for everyone here, so never fear – no matter your budget, your pooch’s bad breath can be sorted out with little to no panic over cost.

Questions & Answers

What are some common causes of bad breath in dogs?

Dogs (just like us) can develop a case of bad breath for a variety of reasons. Although it can be due to something that Fido dug up in the garden and ate, this is usually a short-term problem and will resolve itself within a day or two.

If your pup has constant, consistent smelly breath, though, there are a few things that could be the culprit. An unhealthy diet can be a big factor, especially one that includes plenty of human food. Dogs’ bodies process things differently to ours, and so food that is meant for humans will not always be great for pets.

Aside from that, the biggest reason for halitosis is an unhealthy mouth. Poor dental hygiene can lead to gum problems and tooth decay, which in turn can be the source of an unpleasant smell. This is usually more common in dogs with really small mouths, as well as brachycephalic or short-nosed dogs, because their mouths tend to be very crowded with teeth.

There are also medical conditions that could cause a foul breath odor, such as kidney disease, diabetes (this can cause an almost sickly sweet smell), and digestive issues.

What else can I do to prevent bad breath in my dog?

It’s essential that you maintain a good dental hygiene routine with your pet from as young an age as possible. Cleaning their teeth is a great idea, and it isn’t difficult if you introduce them to it early. Making sure they follow a healthy diet and have good quality chew toys is another important thing.

The items on this list should never be used as a standalone method for keeping good dental hygiene. They should be used sparingly, and in conjunction with a good diet and regular teeth cleaning.

Dry kibble is usually helpful for keeping plaque off of your pup’s teeth, and so if they continue to have bad breath while on a kibble diet, you may want to reconsider the quality of the kibble you’re feeding them. You want something with no wheat, corn, or soy, with a real meat as the first ingredient, and ideally with plenty of fruits and veg as carbs. Also, removing wet food from your pup’s diet can help reduce terrible breath quite significantly.

When should there be cause for concern?

If your pup is eating a great quality kibble, avoiding wet food, has a regular teeth cleaning routine, and has no other apparent cause for his or her halitosis, then it might be time for a trip to the vet for a checkup.

Be alert to your dog’s behavior and if they display any other signs of dental issues or discomfort. Things like struggling to eat their kibble, sudden depression or lethargy, and shying away from attention (especially when patted or touched around the mouth or face) can be signs that your pooch is in pain or a significant amount of discomfort.

If the odor is sweet, fruity, or abnormal in any other way, then a vet’s visit is probably a good plan.

What kinds of breath fresheners are out there?

There are a variety of breath-freshening products out there. You can choose one that works best for you, or you can use more than one, or all of them, depending on your pup.

Sprays are common, as they are generally easy to use, taste good, and are fairly affordable. Similar to these are gels, which may be slightly more difficult to feed your dog, but are still a good option and can be used as a treat.

Chews are great for cleaning your dog’s teeth while freshening his or her breath, as well as keeping them busy for a couple of hours. Most of these will need to be added into your pup’s diet as extras (if you know how many calories your dog needs and feed them accordingly, a couple off chews could mean they’re eating more than they should be).

Water additives are great if your pooch really doesn’t like anyone near his or her mouth and is fussy about fresh-smelling treats. Simply add a few drops to your pet’s water and it will help spruce up his or her breath when they have a drink of water.

There are even ways you can freshen your pup’s breath using ingredients you may have in your cupboard at home.

Is there a particular kind of breath freshener that is better than others?

What type of breath-freshening product you choose to use will depend largely on you and your fluff. If you know your pup isn’t too keen on having something sprayed in their mouth, then obviously a spray would be a bad choice for them and something like a water additive may be a good idea. If your pooch is one who will happily lick anything you offer them, then you have pretty much all the choice in the world.

There is really no type of breath freshener that can be said to be far better than the rest. There are many factors that go into the breath-freshening process, and what works for one dog may not work for another.

Typically, when it comes to cleaning and freshening at the same time, a chew is a great option. But that doesn’t mean the other choices are less – they’re simply different, and you will need to put a bit of thought into what would work best for you and your fur baby.

What should I be looking for in a breath freshening product for my dog?

As with everything that goes into your dog’s mouth, the product you choose here should be all-natural and contain no harmful or chemical ingredients. The membranes that line your dog’s mouth absorb chemicals far more quickly than you realize, so it’s essential that there’s nothing dodgy in these products that could end up in your pup’s bloodstream and cause trouble.

You’ll also want something that tastes good to your pet. You don’t really want to be fighting with your pooch to get this in their mouth, so if it’s tasty then it will make everyone’s lives easier. It should also be easy to use, both for you and your pup. If it’s a mission to use, eventually you’ll lose motivation and your pup just won’t care anymore.

You should also try and get a good idea of the cleaning power of the product in addition to the freshening properties. It’s great to find a product that hides a bad breath smell, but if it can work on the root of the problem while keeping your pup’s mouth smelling decent, then all the better.

Can there be dangers if my dog has too much?

If the product you’ve chosen for your pooch is all-natural and doesn’t contain artificial or chemical stuff, the only dangers might be a rather upset stomach and a pup who doesn’t want to try breath-freshener again for a long time.

As long as the product is filled with natural stuff it shouldn’t do any lasting harm. Your dog may vomit or have diarrhea, so just make sure they have plenty of water to keep hydrated until they’re feeling better. If you are worried about the way they’re reacting or if they’re showing more severe symptoms, take them to the vet to get checked out.
