If you have a dog who has been diagnosed with this condition, you can help improve their health by feeding them the best dog food for hypothyroidism.

Nutrient Content

If your pet is suffering from lethargy as one of their symptoms of hypothyroidism, this food would be great to feed them as they’ll be getting the nutrients they need at a decent calorie count. 27% protein content is a little on the high side but with its calorie content, it shouldn’t have any negative effects for dogs who are less active.

Garbanzo beans are its main source of fiber, which helps with digestion.

2. Honest Kitchen Human Grade Dog Food

  • Easily digestible ingredients for senior dogs with sensitive stomach
  • Contains premium quality organic kelp
  • Easy to prepare formulation

CONS

  • High calorie
  • Not suitable for dogs who are sensitive to grains (oats & barley)

Honest Kitchen Human-Grade Dog Food is one of the best for older dogs who have trouble processing regular kibble.

It’s human-grade food, so you can be sure it’s packed with nutrition and safe for your dog’s consumption. It’s made with quality ingredients and has no added preservatives, so there’s nothing in there that may trigger any allergic reaction. Its nutritional profile is ideal for dogs who suffer from hypothyroidism. It is soft on the palate and tasty, so your senior pooch will enjoy every bite.

Dehydrated Ingredients

The Honest Kitchen dehydrates their ingredients, which helps keep them fresh with no added preservatives. Drying out ingredients is the best way of preserving them without adding anything artificial. And the best part is that they retain most of their nutritional value and flavor. It also prevents the growth of bacteria that thrive in warm air and makes the food compact while keeping it full of good nutrients.

You’ll only find organic and human-grade ingredients in this food. It’s nutrient-dense and very easy on the mouth and stomach.

Quick and Easy to Prepare

All that’s required to give your senior pup a great meal is to add warm water. Not only does it bulk up the food, it keeps your pooch hydrated as well.

Dogs (especially seniors) with thyroid disease may be prone to lethargy and this may mean that they don’t drink as much water as they should be. This meal will give them the nutrients they need to keep healthy as well as the hydration they need for easy digestion.

PROS

  • Complete, balanced diet for a product at its price point
  • Contains high quality kelp
  • Packed with essential nutrients from high quality ingredients
  • Fairly decent calorie count

CONS

  • Contains no “real meat” – meat meal only (although this is high in protein)
  • Contains grains (good ones, but may not be suitable for dogs who are sensitive to them)

This is an average calorie, lower protein kibble, containing all that’s necessary for a dog with hypothyroidism to thrive. The protein, fruits, and veggies are easily digestible. The addition of kelp is also helpful for those dogs with less active thyroids.

Gentle Giants Canine Nutrition Dog Food is made from quality ingredients and is available at just over a dollar per pound of food. You really can’t beat this one price-wise.

Highly Concentrated Protein Sources

While raw ingredients are always best, the absence of real meat isn’t necessarily a problem, so don’t let this put you off.

This dog food contains chicken and fish meal, which are highly concentrated forms of protein, and are also easy to digest. The veggies and fruits included are dried, which helps preserve the nutrient content in this food.

This is best for dogs who can tolerate grains (it contains rice and oatmeal) and whose owners are looking for a dog food that is healthy and won’t cost a fortune.

PROS

  • Great for dogs who are taking kelp or iodine supplements
  • High-quality, all-natural ingredients
  • Contains good vitamin E and fatty acid levels for healthy skin and coat

CONS

  • Doesn’t contain kelp, so unless your dog is already on supplements, this could be considered a disadvantage for dogs with hypothyroidism

Kelp is a helpful ingredient to have in a dog food as it contains iodine which stimulates the production of thyroid hormones. But just because a dog food doesn’t include kelp in its ingredients doesn’t mean it’s not ideal for dogs with hypothyroidism.

If you are already feeding your dog supplemental iodine, or your vet advises against a food containing kelp, Taste Of The Wild Premium Dry Dog Food is a great choice to feed your pet. It’s healthy, well-balanced, grain-free dog food that contains real, wholesome foods ingredients.

Ingredient Quality

The ingredients used to make this food are natural and come from high quality sources.

Salmon is a great protein source for dogs with low thyroid function as it also contains essential fatty acids, which helps dogs who may be suffering from dry skin and fur. The protein count is at 25%, which is ideal for dogs who are moderately active.

Taste of the Wild food also contains their special K9 strain of probiotics, which are developed specifically to improve and maintain a healthy immune system in dogs while ensuring food is digested properly.

Iodine Supplements

Sometimes a vet will suggest putting thyroxine-deficient dogs on iodine supplements. If your dog is one of those who takes a supplemental dose of iodine each day, it’s most likely not necessary to get any more from the kelp in dog foods.

While it’s not an absolute no-no to feed your dog a food containing kelp if they are on supplements, we recommend a kelp-free food for pups already getting enough iodine.

  • Minimally processed which retains flavor and nutrients
  • Easy to prepare dog food
  • Contains chia seeds, flaxseed and sunflower oil that provide essential Omega-3 and -6 fatty acids

CONS

  • It’s somewhat pricey
  • Low protein count (depending on your dog, this could be a pro or a con!)
  • The lower calorie count may mean your dog won’t fill up on one meal!

Tylee’s is a lesser-known brand that makes fresh food from the most wholesome ingredients.

Tylee’s Human-Grade Grain Free Dog Food is great for dogs who suffer from hypothyroidism. It’s a well-balanced meal that contains good animal protein sources. It has an abundance of fruits and veggies, and contains dried kelp for a little iodine boost. Fresh food is also usually much easier to digest.

Human-Grade Dog Food

The ingredient list is impressive, containing mostly whole fruits and vegetables and 3 different forms of a single animal protein.

It also contains a few chelated minerals which are quite easily digested, and chia seeds, flaxseed, and sunflower oil are fantastic sources of Omega-3 and -6 fatty acids (which is great for hypothyroidism as it helps lower the chances of dry skin and brittle fur).

Lower Calorie Than Most

At 161 calories per cup, this dog food is significantly lower in calories than most products especially at its price point.

PROS

  • Contains glucosamine which keeps joints strong (helpful if dogs have extra weight)
  • Grain-free dog food
  • High-quality and easily digestible animal protein sources
  • Contain kelp for an iodine boost

CONS

  • Fairly high calorie count
  • Higher protein count could contribute to weight gain

American Journey Grain Free Dog Food is ideal for active dogs who happen to have a dysfunctional thyroid, as it’s packed full of great protein, high-quality carbs, kelp and joint-strengthening supplements.

The protein and calorie counts are a little on the higher side, which means that your pup would need to be active enough to work it off. The addition of menhaden fish meal adds a nice dose of glucosamine, which helps keep joints strong for active pups and if your dog has gained some weight as a result of their thyroid condition, it protects joints against the extra strain.

Whole Foods and Chelated Minerals

The list of ingredients looks good, beginning with 3 sources of easily digestible protein.

It also has fresh vegetables, fruits, and chelated minerals which also assist with digestion. Menhaden fish meal is what gives the glucosamine boost. Kelp is a welcome addition which is helpful to stimulate the thyroid. Chickpeas and pea protein are plant-based protein sources, which contribute to its high protein content.

High Calorie For High Activity

With 390 calories in a cup of this kibble, your dog will need to be fairly active to avoid packing on the pounds.

Although lethargy can be one of the symptoms of a dysfunctional thyroid, it doesn’t affect all pups who have been diagnosed, so if your dog still enjoys regular exercise this food would serve them well.

  • “Superfood blend” containing healthy vegetables
  • Contains good sources of glucosamine
  • Contains great Omega-3 and -6 fatty acid sources

CONS

  • Contains grains
  • Slightly pricey
  • Contains brewers rice

While Nutro Ultra Adult Dog Food says it’s for large breeds, the nutrient content is perfect for any size dog.

It’s great for dogs who suffer from hypothyroidism, as it provides a healthy, balanced, all-natural meal with good protein levels coming from great sources. It’s got a nice calorie content, which will help keep your dog at a good weight, and added glucosamine if they may be carrying a little extra, to keep those joints healthy and stable.

Contains Good Grains

Grains get a bad rap, but they’re not all bad ingredients.

This food contains some of the good ones – whole brown rice, rice bran, and whole-grain oatmeal. These grains are easily digestible and far more nutritious than wheat, soy, or corn. Brewers rice is the only one that is not on the “good grains” list – it has little to no nutritious value and is often considered to be a filler. That being said, this food is still healthy and nutritious for your dog as long as they can tolerate the good grains!

Extra Benefits

The “Superfood blend” is packed with antioxidants to keep the immune system functioning at optimal levels, which is great for dogs with any sort of health disorder.

It also contains natural sources of glucosamine, and the oils and fatty acids found in flaxseed, chia seeds and sunflower oil will help give your pet some relief from the flaky skin and dry, tough fur that can come with hypothyroidism.

These recipes are formulated specifically for puppies, so if you happen to have a puppy who has been diagnosed pretty early, this would be a fantastic option to feed him. There are a few flavors in this range, all of which avoid beef. It does contain grains, but the good ones (brown rice and oatmeal).

Puppies’ Nutritional Needs

Although hypothyroidism is a disease that usually only affects older dogs, it can be a congenital condition that develops within the first year of a puppy’s life.

It’s always a good idea to start treating these things early, not only with meds but in your dog’s diet too. This puppy formula contains a decent calorie count (407 – puppies need more than adults), a bit of an elevated protein count (26%), DHA (for healthy brain development), and a dose of kelp. Flaxseed and fish oil also keep their coat sleek and shiny from the start.

Blue Buffalo’s LifeSource Bits

One thing that sets these guys a little apart from other brands is the addition of their special blend of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. The ingredients in these have been selected by animal nutritionists, and they’ve been cold-pressed to avoid losing nutrients to heat.

They are intended to improve immune system health and keep a healthy oxidative balance in your puppy’s body, so they can only be a good thing as your pup grows.

CONS

  • High protein count
  • Does not contain kelp
  • Slightly high calorie

Merrick is a brand that is committed to creating balanced meals for pets.

Their ingredient quality is top-notch and their foods contain nothing artificial. This particular formula have higher amounts of protein than other dog food products. It’s recommended to feed this to large breed dogs who are still quite active despite suffering from hypothyroidism.

The protein levels and added glucosamine and chondroitin make this dog food perfect for big dogs, as long as they are getting enough exercise!

Intended for Large Breed Dogs

Hypothyroidism is more common in medium to large breeds, and some breeds that seem to be more affected include Golden Retrievers, Doberman Pinschers, and Irish Setters.

Large breed dogs’ nutritional requirements differ from smaller dogs, and glucosamine and chondroitin are much more essential for these big boys than they are for other pups. A high protein count is great for maintaining muscle, but it’s important that your large breed is active and able to work off the extra calories when eating this food!

  • If your dog is sensitive to poultry, there are chicken ingredients in other flavours too – be careful!

Wellness Core Natural Grain Free Dog Food contains real meat, fruits, vegetables, and plenty of chelated minerals which are easily absorbed into the body.

Because of the high calorie and protein counts, this food would be best for large breed dogs, as they naturally need more calories than the little guys.

Natural, Whole Food Ingredients

The protein sources include turkey, turkey meal, chicken meal, and chicken liver (be careful of hidden chicken ingredients if your pet is sensitive to poultry!).

Vegetables such as peas, broccoli, carrots, kale, and fruits like blueberries and apples make this a superfood-rich offering that is high in antioxidants and vitamins and minerals. The ingredients are also GMO-free, which is helpful when it comes to making sure that there’s nothing in your pet’s food that can trigger any allergic reactions. Glucosamine, flaxseed, and salmon oil add the little extra bits that make this great for large breeds with low thyroid hormone levels.

Naturally Preserved

The lack of artificial ingredients is essential when it comes to picking dog foods for low thyroid function that would promote your dog’s health, and Wellness Core contains nothing that isn’t natural.

They preserve their food using mixed tocopherols, which is the accepted natural preservative used in high-quality foods for hypothyroidism. This is essential for dogs with hypothyroidism – because their metabolism is slower than average, artificial ingredients can cause digestion problems. When all is considered, this would be a great dog food for your large breed.

Key Factors to Consider When Choosing a Dog Food for Hypothyroidism

1) Ingredient Quality

This is one of the most important elements of a dog food. Even if the food has a fantastic protein content, a super calorie count, and added vitamins, minerals, and healthy extras, if the ingredients are artificial or low-quality, your dog is immediately at a health disadvantage.

Nutrition isn’t all about the numbers on the label. It’s about exactly what ingredients contribute to those numbers, and the unfortunate truth is that the dog food industry is flooded with low-quality products simply because they’re cheaper to produce.

Fresh, natural, wholesome ingredients are always the best choice – real meat, fruits, and vegetables. Feeding your dog a meal that contains real, fresh ingredients will improve their health, mood, and limit the vet visits (a bonus for both pup and owner).

2) Protein Quality

There are two kinds of proteins that you’ll be likely to find in dog foods for hypothyroidism – plant protein and animal protein.

Animal protein is always the top pick, as it’s more easily digestible and also provides a better balance of amino acids than plant proteins.

Real meat should always be the very first ingredient on the list, as this means that it is the most prominent ingredient. Meat meal is another good source of animal protein that is easy to digest.

Plant proteins (such as pea, potato, etc) are not bad at all, so if you see them on the ingredient list there’s no need to worry. But they should definitely accompany a quality animal protein for the most balanced diet.

3) Calorie Count

Calorie count is an essential criteria in choosing dog food for hypothyroidism because one of the biggest signs of the disease is weight gain. This is because the body struggles to metabolize the food that’s going in.

A dog food that has a high calorie count is not necessarily bad for your dog with hypothyroidism, but it may contribute to an increase in weight.

These pups are also usually quite lethargic and won’t be getting much exercise, so the lower the calories (while still providing all the essential nutrients), the easier it will be for your pup to keep their body weight stable.

4) Digestibility

This refers to the amount of nutrients that are absorbed when your dog eats the food. Most dog foods for hypothyroidism don’t display this info, but any decent quality food will be 82% and upwards.

Since these numbers are not readily available, the next best thing to give you an idea of digestibility is the ingredient quality of the food.

The other thing that gives a really good indication of how digestible the food is is your dog’s poop. Yes, you may need to do some poop examining, but for the purposes of this article we’ve done the dirty work for you and checked out reports from other pet owners on the quality of their dogs’ stool.

Questions & Answers

What is hypothyroidism?

The thyroid is a gland located in the neck that produces hormones that the body needs.

Hypothyroidism is a disorder in which this gland malfunctions and doesn’t produce enough of the hormones. It occurs in humans as well as pets, and is usually caused by inflammation or shrinkage of the gland in dogs.

The hormones that it produces are called thyroxine and triiodothyronine, and their main function is to assist in converting food into energy (ie. they play a large part in controlling the metabolism).

Hypothyroidism causes the body’s metabolism to slow down, which affects digestion, weight loss, temperature regulation, and general wellbeing.

What is the difference between hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism?

Hypothyroidism is when the thyroid gland doesn’t produce enough thyroxine. The metabolism slows down and this causes a variety of symptoms, as it really affects every single organ in the body.

Hyperthyroidism is the opposite. The thyroid gland goes into overdrive and produces too much of the hormone, which causes the body to super-metabolize everything that goes into it. This has different dangers to hypothyroidism, as the body burns things off quicker than they come in. It is rare in dogs, though – hypothyroidism is far more common.

What are the symptoms of hypothyroidism in dogs?

Symptoms of low thyroid hormone production include weight gain (with a decreased appetite), lethargy, inability to tolerate cold temperatures, and an increase in skin and hair problems. The skin can become dry and flaky or develop dark pigmentation spots, and also becomes more susceptible to infection. The fur may become dull and brittle, and there may be an increase in shedding.

Other symptoms that are less common but may appear (in conjunction with the more common ones above) are abnormal nerve function that may cause weakness or lopsidedness, seizures, dry eyes, and thickening of the facial skin, loss of libido in intact males and lack of heat periods in females.

How is hypothyroidism diagnosed?

The main thing needed to diagnose hypothyroidism will be a blood test, and the main function of the blood test will be to check the hormone levels in your dog’s body. This will be carefully assessed by your vet in conjunction with whatever symptoms your dog is displaying.

Be careful not to self-diagnose this disease in your pet! The symptoms can be signs of many other things, and the only way to tell for sure is to get your vet to check your pet’s hormone levels.

What are the ideal ingredients that make up the best dog food for hypothyroidism?

Animal proteins are best, but be sure to avoid any by-products. Beef can be slightly more problematic for dogs with hypothyroidism (particularly beef by-products, but best be safe and avoid it entirely). Fresh fruits and vegetables are always a winner, but even more so for dogs with this disease.

Grains can cause digestion issues in some dogs, so it’s recommended to avoid grains, with the possible exception of rice. A great ingredient to find in a dog food for hypothyroidism is kelp – this contains iodine which boosts thyroid function.

What are the nutritional requirements for a dog with hypothyroidism?

There are no very specific dietary requirements for dogs with hypothyroidism, but there are some things that you should be aware of if you have a pet with the condition.

A balanced diet is important, with good levels of animal protein and fats, as well as good Omega-3 and -6 fatty acid levels (this will help keep your pup’s skin and coat as healthy as possible). Added vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants are always helpful, and chelated minerals will help with digestion.

Will my dog suffer any side effects from eating dog foods for hypothyroidism?

There are not many side effects that come from eating a dog food catering for hypothyroidism. If it’s quite different from your dog’s current meal, you may notice that their stool has a stronger odor than it used to. Other than that, there aren’t any reported problems that have been identified as side effects.
