The wide surface area of this slicker makes it more comfortable on your dog, and reduces any pressure as you brush. With two different  bristle types on this firm grooming slicker brush, your Goldendoodle can get a top coat and undercoat brush.

The rubber grip means there’ll be no accidental dropping of the dog brush or poking your Goldendoodle by mistake.

If your dog has a very matted coat, you may require a brush with more strength in order to groom your Goldendoodle effectively.

What Are The Different Types Of Brushes For Goldendoodles

1) Slicker Brush

A slicker brush is used to get rid of small tangles and mats in your Goldendoodle’s undercoat. It should be used once most of the knots and mats in the main coat have been dealt with, which will be done with a bristle brush or pin brush.

2) Bristle Brush

Goldendoodles can come in a curly or wavy variety (like a Golden Retriever), and bristle brushes are great for grooming Goldendoodles with a wavy coat type. Choose your bristle length and density based on your Goldendoodle’s coat. Smooth hair can get away with soft bristles, but coarse hair will need something stiffer. Most brushes for Golden Retrievers also work great for Goldendoodles.

3) Pin Brush

For Goldendoodles with wiry or curly coats (closer to a poodle), pin brushes would be best for pet grooming without hurting your dog. Pin brushes are more effective than a bristle brush because the pins are stiffer and can really work through the curls.

4) Comb

Combs are used for getting rid of any small knots remaining once you’ve groomed your Goldendoodle. You won’t use these to remove large tangles. Combs are a finishing tool, and are most often used to give the coat a fluffed-up effect.

5) Dematting Brush

Dematting dog brushes, or undercut rakes, can be helpful for getting through those tough, defiant knots in your Goldendoodle’s coat. These tools are made for dealing with tough, rough knots, so they’re quite sharp. You’ll need to be careful you don’t hurt your Goldendoodle with it while you’re grooming him or her.

6) Combination Brush

Some brushes have two different types of brushes on one handle, which is a great versatile tool. Generally, this will be a pin and bristle brush, or perhaps pin brushes with a slicker brush. You can get combination combs, too.

What To Look For In A Great Brush For Goldendoodle

Durability

Nobody wants to buy a brush for your Goldendoodle that breaks or wears out after just a few uses. Durability is an important factor, especially when it comes to keeping your dog safe. A brush that breaks, cracks, or wears out can pose a risk to your dog by scratching their skin or pulling fur out.

The best brush for Goldendoodles should be well-made and crafted from high-quality materials. Cheap plastic is obviously not going to last as long as a solid wood brush, for example.

Another bonus of using wood is that it absorbs the natural oils from your pup’s skin and helps to distribute them over the coat.

Apart from that, wood lasts a long time if you look after it properly, and it’s also relatively comfortable in the hand.

Make sure your dog doesn’t get hold of it and chew it, though!

Safety

The best brush for a Goldendoodle is safe to use and poses little risk to their safety (and yours!). Even if your Goldendoodle doesn’t have particularly sensitive skin, grooming tools have the potential to cause pain.

Whether you need to use a pin brush to work through tight curls or a de-matting brush to tackle some serious tangles and mats, make sure the material won’t hurt your dog as you brush him or her.

It needs to be safe for you too! Ensure that there are no sharp edges that could injure you as you’re brushing.

If you’re using a brush that’s older, you’ll need to keep a close eye on it to ensure it doesn’t begin to crack or wear out.

Ease of Use

It’s already quite a task to get through all that fur. You don’t want your brush working against you as well!

A good brush for Goldendoodle fur will not only do its job on the tangles and mats, but will do so without fighting with you or pulling on your poor dog’s fur.

Although the Goldendoodle has unusually curly or wiry fur, pet grooming shouldn’t be a painful, uncomfortable, or strenuous experience.

If the brush doesn’t do its job on your Goldendoodle, or is overly complicated to use, it’s probably best to get a different one that you find more user-friendly.

Affordability

Brushes come in varying degrees of affordability. Here at Dog Embassy, we understand that not everybody will be able to purchase the top of the range products. That’s totally okay, though, because there are products out there that are both affordable and of superb quality.

Budget is always a consideration. Sure, you need to consider safety, durability, and ease of use, so the bottom of the range Goldendoodle brush is not likely to be the best choice.

But there are plenty of affordable choices out there. We’ve included a Best Value for Money option, which we believe is the best affordable brush for Goldendoodles.

5 Tips for a More Effective Goldendoodle Grooming

Follow these tips to make brushing your Goldendoodle easier!

  1. Groom daily. This will get your Goldendoodle used to being brushed, and keep tangles away as much as possible.
  2. Use a detangling conditioner. Bathing your Goldendoodle at least once a week and letting the detangler settle in can help immensely for softening tangles.
  3. Brush with the hair. Brushing against the hair can be uncomfortable and even painful, and can actually lead to more knots.
  4. Don’t forget the hidden areas. Ears, belly, and legs are often overlooked or left out, but some of the worst matting can occur here. Be sure to cover all areas!
  5. Give positive reinforcement. Some dogs enjoy being groomed, but others really don’t. When your Goldendoodle is a good boy or girl, praise them and offer a treat. It will make the experience more tolerable for them, and easier for you.

Questions & Answers

Q: How often should I brush my Goldendoodle?

A: It’s a really good idea to brush your Goldendoodle daily. That way, you can stay ahead of any mats and tangles in your Goldendoodle’s coat and prevent them from getting worse and being even harder to brush out later.

Your Goldendoodle will also get used to being brushed and come to expect it as part of their daily routine.

Brushing your Goldendoodle every day may sound like a lot of work, but it shouldn’t take more than a few minutes if you do it properly. Proper dog grooming means those mats and tangles won’t have a chance to settle in!

Q: Do Goldendoodles have an undercoat?

A: Because a Goldendoodle is a mix of a poodle and a Golden Retriever, they may or may not have an undercoat, depending on which parent they take after!

Poodles don’t  have an undercoat, but have tight, wiry curls close to the body. Golden Retrievers, on the other hand, have a thick undercoat that needs plenty of grooming.

Your Goldendoodle could be either! You should be able to tell which one your Goldendoodle is just by looking and feeling his coat.

Q: How do I keep my Goldendoodle from matting?

A: Brush your Goldendoodle every day to prevent mats and tangles from building up. This won’t work if you do half a job, though – you need to brush your dog’s coats thoroughly, and make sure even small knots are gone.

It’s a good idea to have a pin and bristle brush to remove dead hair from the surface and a comb to work out smaller mats and tangles.

If your Goldendoodle coat gets matted very easily, it’s also worth taking a look at their dog food. Dog food can make quite a difference to a dog’s skin and coat, and if your dog is having trouble with dry or brittle fur that mats easily, changing their dog food could help.

A dog food or puppy food with a high level of Omega fatty acids could keep their skin and coat more moisturized, leading to fewer knots.
